Some time ago I saw a thread about a cycling trip to Harbin. The author also posted many scenic Harbin pcitures. I don't seem to be able to search for it now. Can someone post the thread?

we tripped to Harbin and Inner Mongolia by air instead of bicycle. And if you just wanna see the fotos, pls go to the link above. If you need the cycling trip route, then pls google it or ask help in other forums.

Yes that's the one that I am looking for. Can't get anough of the captivating sceneries.

By the way, is it possible to air-ship your bike over and cycle over there. Although I am not sure if you can find cycling track out of the city area, the lush prairie is just too tempting!

Does a foreigner need a special visa to get in?

1. foreigners don't need any special visa
2. of course you can air-ship your bike, but pls make sure it is well packed
3. in my view, mountain bike will be the wiser choice and you will definitely enjoy the trip
4. you can fly to Harbin or Hailaer from Shanghai directly.
go to this link for cheap air-ticket  http://www.china-sss.com/index.htm
5. try to use Hulunber, Hulunbeier, Hailaer as key words to google, maybe you could find more results

Few foreigners go to there and Hulunber Prairie is still a virgin land for most travellers.
You cannot find hotel, private bathroom, hot shower, air-conditioner there, so perhaps it is inconvenience to you.

However it's fantastic experience in some extent. Just carry your bike, and ride, ride, ride...

Thanks for the tips. I have not ventured anywhere out of Shanghai on my MTB. Partly because I didn't (and don't have the time....) do enough research to figure out if it is possible to transport my MTB to other cities, by train or air.

You are right, Hulunber prairie may be a tall order for foreigners who are used to hygienic and comfortable environment.

By the way, I heard one can take a bullet train to Hangzhou. I was in West Lake recently and the scenery is just beautiful. Is it possible to take my MTB on the train to go to Hangzhou? Do I have to pay additional fare for the MTB?

1. you can take your MTB bike onto bullet train without any extra fare, but just remember to dismantle the wheels.

2. Hangzhou is the heaven for MTB, especailly in Spring.

Recommendation: Longjing龙井, Jiuxi九溪, Yanggongdi杨公堤 etc. or just circle around the West Lake (small circle through Sudi苏堤: 11km; big circle through Yanggongdi杨公堤: 25km).

Thanks Jenny, great advice. Will try when the weather is warmer. The sub 10deg in Shanghai is just not conducive for any outdoor activity.

Your english is good. Are you local?
