Chinese police have shot a man who was holding a toddler hostage at a Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant in Shanghai, state media say.
The girl, who is believed to be three-years-old, was freed unharmed.
The shooting followed more than six hours of negotiations between police and the hostage-taker who held the girl at knifepoint.
State media gave no information about the attacker's motives, but reports suggested he had mental problems.
The man, who was in his 40s, seized the girl at the KFC restaurant at about 1500 local time (0700 GMT) in the western Putuo district, Shanghai TV reported.
The attack happened as the toddler's mother stepped away to buy food, reports say.
At least 100 police were rushed to the scene, as hundreds of onlookers gathered to watch the hostage drama unfold.
The police opened fire after the prolonged negotiations with the attacker failed.
Some witnesses said they later saw the man taken away on a stretcher. It was not clear whether he was killed or wounded. |
