标题: 20km maiden ride along LongDong Avenue
I have been planning this ride for some time since I saw some of the postings in this forum on 三甲港. From the photos posted, the scenery looks reasonable. I figured from Google Earth that the distance from where I stay (Hua Mu Lu) to 三甲港 is about 20km. That makes 40km for a round trip, something manageable given that I have hardly cycled more than 10km each ride since moving here.

I used to do 30-40km back home on every Friday night with my friend. The ride starts from a beautiful seaside park, along the airport runway and ends at a seaside village. We will have our supper there before cycling back. We usually start at 8+pm and ends just before midnight.

Since moving here 5 months ago, I have been so caught up with work and business trips. My stamina has also been heading downhill given the limited time that I have to devote to any meaningful form of exercise. The feasting and drinking didn't help at all.

I have been doing injustice to my MTB (Ironhorse). It travels more than 3000km with me to Shanghai but just lies idly outside my corridor most of the time. About 1 month ago, I started researching more into the area where I stayed and eventually decided to try out the 三甲港 route.

To prepare for the trip, I decided to sleep early the night before but ended up waking up at 530am in the morning. I then went back to sleep to wake up at 9am and felt like I have slept only for 3 hours ! (which is true if I count from 530am). Breakfast was a simple sandwich with egg, hotdog and baked beans. The weather looks grey but no rain forecasted today, outside temperature feels like 25C with wind speed about 15kph- ideal for cycling. I was only concerned about the wind since I will be cycling E-W direction. A 15kph wind can slow me down.

The direction was quite straighforward. I took the Hua Mu Lu-Luo Shan Lu and then LongDong Avenue. It is supposed to bring me all the way to 三甲港. I am hoping to maintain about 21-22kph speed but only managed about 18kph heading in the east direction along LongDong Avenue. I can feel the wind resistance and the first 5km was quite tiring. Perhaps my stamina has really deteriorated as well. The road condition was good. I am glad that there is a dedicated cycling section so that I don't always have to keep a look out for cars. This is a luxury compared to what I have back home.

I bumped into a group of local cyclists after the Changjiang Science Park. They seem to be heading in the same direction. Most of them were riding road bike except 2-3 of them. They were within sight most of the time. Although my plan was to hit 三甲港, my energy was running low by the time I hit the half way mark at the junction of TangLu Lu and LongDong Avenue. I was contemplating whether should I carry on or turn back and call it day with the 20km all-in ride. I opted for the latter as I felt slightly disappointed (and tired) given the scenery along the route is dotted with mainly buildings. I was hoping to see some villages, parks and rivers but I guess the LongDong Avenue is the wrong path to take.

The trip back was a breeze with the wind assistance. Again scenery wasn't that great. This 20km trip tooks me an hour and 20 mins to complete with all the stops for drink and photo shooting. I figured that I could have cycled another 10km without "collapsing" but didn't have the mood to do so today. I am now back at Google Earth to see which other more scenic route can I take to go to 三甲港. Hope to be back on the road again soon. I did a mental calculation when cycling back. There are only 52 weeks in a year. If I only manage to cycle on the weekend (minus the festive seasons), I will be using my MTB (and exercise) about 50 times a year. That's a shame on how I treat myself and my MTB. I ought to spend more time on these than my work!!

Nice note~hope you'll find routes you enjoy~but villages...I don't think there is any which offer beatiful sights within a short distance...unless you ride a long distance to such as 锦西,乌镇...and I'm not sure if 崇明岛 is fit for riding,there seems to be some nice 农家乐.

I stay near your place at Hua Mu Lu. I just brought over my roadie from Singapore and is looking for someone to ride with. I have no idea of what routes are available and hope that we can explore together.

Glad to hear from a fellow Singaporean in Shanghai. From where you stay, it looks like we can do some rides together. I only have a MTB... that may slow you down if you are on a road bike. My stamina isn't great either with all the heavy feasting. Am waiting for the temperature to raise above 15C before hitting the road again.

Thats just about right becos i am no power biker, just want to burn some fat with the long distance and explore around on a bike, it will be great to have someone to do this with. Anyway, I have only this coming weekend to do something becos come the weekend of 31st, I will be in-field for a whole month on projects. I really want to ride a little before I start this ordeal.
